“It’s the little details that are vital. Little things make big things happen.” — John Wooden

Are you new to surfing? Looking to up your surf game? Read on as we review the ProTrainer Surf mat.

Drills and exercises are used to cement the basics and ensure consistent performance in all sports.  In basketball, athletes run ladders and practice jump shots. In baseball, a day at the batting cages can help perfect your swing. The ProTrainer Surf team believes that surfing shouldn’t be any different — practicing the basics will ultimately improve your surfing skill.  The ProTrainer Surf performance mat is meant to do just that: it is a fun surf training tool put in your quiver. It is an oversized yoga mat with specially designed markings that when combined with the recommended calisthenics drills, can build surfing muscle memory needed to up your skill to the next level.

The biggest benefit will come to new and intermediate surfers who want to up their surfing game. One of the most crucial tasks in surfing is being able to pop up, or get to your feet quickly. These workouts will promote good habits right from the start and avoid having to retrain poor skills such as using your knees to stand up.  In addition to a quick pop-up, arm strength from push up will help with duck diving and overall strength. While the drills may show the largest gains for beginners, surfing experts will still find value in staying sharp. Afterall, even NBA stars need to practice their free throws.

I love having variety in my workouts. I’d rather train for a triathlon versus a 10k run because the day-to-day workouts are not repetitive. The ProTrainer Surf drills and the alternative surf-yoga training program provide fun surf-focused cross training that add spice to your normal workout repertoire. If you’re not a surfer, this is another way to get an awesome and fun workout while sculpting your beach bod for spring break or summer. Maybe you live miles from an ocean or the weather is not cooperating — you can still get your surf workout in.

This mat is complementary to other dry land products meant to enhance surfing, such as the IndoBoard which focuses on balance and stabilization. They have also recently come out with a yoga mat version. I would love to see these two products combined in some sort of collaboration — I would definitely be up for a class like that. SUP yoga has also gotten popular lately — to add surf workout variety, add the ProTrainer Surf mat and up the challenge.

Here at Moms & Groms, we love products that help our young ones get active. ProTrainer Surf also has a colorful Keiki (kids) Play & Surf mat that is currently on pre-order.  Colorful animals decorate this smaller sized mat specifically designed for kiddos. It can be challenging to get a workout in as a parent with kids in tow. With the keiki mat, your little ones can practice alongside you, allowing the whole family to get a workout in!
